Polish mermaid movie takes hat-trick at Portuguese festival

Polish movie 'The Lure' won the awards for best film, best director and best special effects at the 36th Oporto International Film Festival 'Fantasporto'.

Agnieszka Smoczyńska's debut tells the unlikely story of two mermaid sisters who find work performing at a nightclub.

The Portuguese event, held in the coastal city of Oporto, has been championed by Variety as one of the 25 best film festivals in the world.

It caters to all genres, but has a special taste for Fantasy,” concluding each edition with a vampires' ball.

'The Lure' has already been making waves on the international circuit, winning the special jury award at America's Sundance Film Festival in late January.

Cinevue enthused that “violent, sexy fairytale 'The Lure' is more than the sum of its parts; a luscious, strangely enchanting watch and terrific fun for those who'll launch themselves into it.” (nh)
