Owing to the distinct lack of palm trees in Central Europe in centuries past, Poles took to creating their own alternatives for Palm Sunday, typically fashioned from wicker, dried flowers and ribbons.

In Lipnica Murowana, the challenge is to create the tallest palm possible.

This year, which saw the 58th edition of the competition, record-holder Zbigniew Urbański trounced his rivals once again, with a concoction that rose to 30.4m.

Urbański was still a considerable distance off his own record, which he accomplished in 2011 with 36.04m.

In other localities, such as Łyse in north eastern Poland, there are annual contests for the most beautiful palm.

Duda enthused that the tradition of fashioning palms is beautifully maintained and developed,” often involving an entire family.

The next generation is growing up and the tradition will continue,” he said. (nh/pk)
