Weekend culture round-up - Krakow in the spotlight

It's often quipped that Krakow has been in a sulk ever since losing its capital status to Warsaw in the late 16th century, but this weekend at the very least, the former has all the aces up its sleeves in the “cultural capital” rankings.
The 4th Film Music Festival kicked off there yesterday, and the vast and much-hyped new museum of contemporary art (MOCAK) opens to the public today. The 9th International Month of Photography in Krakow is in full flow. Meanwhile, this week is also the last chance to catch the National Museum's magical Carpathian concoction, “On the High Uplands: Art of the Huculszczyzna – The Huculszczyzna in Art.”
Elsewhere in Poland, those with a gothic bent might enjoy a curious exhibition at the Royal Palace in Wroclaw. The historical museum there is presenting a never seen before series of illustrated love letters by the late and great artist Franciszek Starowieyski to his wife Teresa. The artist, who passed away in 2009, had a great penchant for the surreal and famously insisted that he was living in the 17th century.
Meanwhile, a cluster of bands will be descending on Lodz, to chime in with the annual student frolics of Juwenalia. Myslovitz, Vavamuffin and Abradab will be letting rip.
Those happy to continue the party after Sunday might track down Brit rock veterans Uriah Heep, due to hit Poland as part of their 40th birthday tour. They'll be playing Wroclaw on Monday and Katowice on Wednesday. (nh)
