Warsaw Philharmonic musicians have written a letter of apology to Piotr Gliński, Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Culture, after he was booed by some of the audience during a concert inaugurating the Beethoven Festival on 13 March.

The booing was a mark of disapproval for some of Gliński’s decisions as culture minister.

In their letter, the musicians describe such behaviour as “scandalous”, saying that “up to now all those who came to participate in a concert in the Warsaw Philharmonic Hall have been treated as welcome guests (…), with political issues and views being irrelevant. What counted was solely a wish to experience music.”

In the musicians’ opinion, the incident was “sad evidence of a lack of sensitivity and of the rudiments of good manners.”

The letter has been signed by over 80 members of the Warsaw Philharmonic. (mk/pk)
