A 26-year-old man will be presented with a statuette by Polish police after he freed a dog that had been chained to the railway near Kłodzko, Lower Silesia.

The man was driving near the railway line at around midday on 11 April when he spotted the dog in distress.

Shortly after he arrived at the scene a train appeared, but the good samaritan managed to alert the driver and get him to stop the locomotive.

Eventually he was able to remove the chains, although the frightened pet ran off.

Police are now trying to clarify who had been the owner of the dog. Charges could be brought if the culprit who chained up the animal is found.

In the meantime, the District Police Commander in Kłodzko thanked the 26-year-old, congratulating him in a ceremony attended by representatives of Fundacja Pod Psią Gwiazdą (The Dog Star Foundation), an animal welfare organisation based in Lower Silesia.

He will be presented with the statuette on Poland's Police Day on 24 July. (nh)
