A-level qualifications, equivalent to a high school diploma in the US, are mandatory for entry to universities in the UK.

“Today’s decision is the result of close co-operation between the Polish Educational Society and the Polish Embassy as well as of the unprecedented mobilisation of the Polish community. We wrote numerous letters, held many meetings with our British colleagues, received political backing from Poland and popular support in the media, on the internet, through social action,” Poland's ambassador to the UK, Witold Sobków, said.

He added that it is important for students to speak at least two languages, not only among the Polish diaspora.

“Bilingualism is not only important to Poles because of patriotic reasons but can also play a key role in ensuring mutual understanding between communities. As Polish has become the second most spoken language in the UK, we expect the number of students taking the A-Level exam to grow. Obtaining a universally recognised qualification in a second language is also a valuable asset in a young person’s career prospects.” (rg/pk)
