The festival marks 20 years since Szymborska won the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Its organizers include the Polish Institute in Rome, the Bologna authorities, the local university and the Wisława Szymborska Foundation.

Director of the Polish Institute in Rome, Paweł Stasikowski, said: "The choice of Bologna is no accident,” adding that Italy was a country of special significance for Szymborska .

"It was Bologna on 27 March 2009 that hosted the largest meeting of the Nobel Prize winner with the public,” Stasikowski said.

Szymborska's poems have been translated into over 40 languages to date. She won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1996. Prior to her death in 2012, she set up a foundation that awards Poland's most generous prize for poets. (pk)
