The prize is awarded by The Superbrands Ltd., an independent arbiter on branding which operates in 80 countries, including Poland.

At a presentation ceremony in Warsaw, Paweł Potoroczyn, the director of the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, which co-sponsors the award, said that the Treliński/Kudlička duo have forged their own, aesthetically-coherent and recognisable idiom in today’s opera world. “Their operatic brand represents a visionary blend of traditional design with the language of the cinema,” he said, adding that this makes opera an attractive genre for the present-day viewer.

In recent years Treliński and Kudlička have worked together on numerous productions, such as Madama Butterfly, The Flying Dutchman, La Boheme, Boris Godunov, and the double-bill of Iolanta and Bluebeard’s Castle, which was staged at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Their forthcoming project is Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, which will open the 2016/2017 season at the Met.

Past recipients of the Polish Superbrands Award were theatre directors Krzysztof Warlikowski and Grzegorz Jarzyna (2012), jazz trumpeter and composer Tomasz Stańko (2013), film director Agnieszka Holland (2014) and the Polin Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw (2015). (mk/rg)
