The annual event begins this evening with an open-air performance featuring giant mobile sculptures manned by Spanish street theater company Carros de Foc.

The festival's programme features concerts, theater performances and showcases held in the outdoors across the city, as well as at the local Evangelical and Roman Catholic churches.

Artists taking the stage during the two-week event include Tunisian jazz musician Dhafer Youssef and Belgian band Kermesz a l'est. German street theater Pas Par Tout and French theater company Underclouds are also billed to perform.

The key idea behind the festival is to promote openness towards other nations and cultures, a concept ingrained in the city's founding myth. As the festival director, Zbigniew Brzoza, points out, Poland's third most populated municipality was jointly established by a community of Germans, Poles, Jews and Russians.

Łódź of Four Cultures winds up on Sunday, 5 June. (aba)
