Canadian soft rock legend Bryan Adams played a one-off show yesterday in the city of Rybnik, south Poland, though attendance was far below what organisers hoped for.

Although the singer was his usual good-humoured self, he struggled to muster the epic crowds that had been touted by the promoters.

Prior to the gig, event organiser Prestige MGM had promised that 15,000 revellers were set to descend on the city's sports stadium.

However, less than a 1000 punters turned out to catch the man behind such hits as Summer of 69, 18 til I Die and his Robin Hood movie anthem (Everything I do) I do it for you.

Critics say that the host city was too much off the beaten track, noting that several of the Polish concert-goers had not heard of their destination prior to the gig, and that the location lacked sufficient hotels for such large-scale events. This, combined with the fact that it was a Monday night, seemed to conspire against the Canadian star.

In recent years, the singer, who is also an accomplished professional photographer, has devoted much of his time to charity work, taking part in and co-organising numerous fund-raising events.

He played a peace concert in Georgian capital Tbilisi in 2008, and following the tsunami that struck Japan this March, he put forward the idea of a collaborative gig to raise money for the quake-stricken country, which may be his next project. (nh/pg)
