The production features a star-studded cast which includes French actress Isabele Huppert performing alongside Poland's Andrzej Chyra and Agata Buzek.
The play is based on Sarah Kane's Phaedra's Love, and also combines extracts from J M Coetzee's Elizabeth Costello and a piece by Lebanese-Canadian playwright Wajdi Mouawad.
'Phaedra(s)' is a story of the forbidden love of a woman for her step-son, bringing ancient Greek characters into modern times.
"Krzysztof Warlikowski [...] reconstructs classical plays with a radical fervour that puts his controversial work at the cutting edge of progressive European theatre," reads a post on the Barbican's official website.
The production will be staged at Europe's largest multi-arts venue until 18 June. (aba)
