A letter of notification was submitted at the headquarters of the World Exhibitions Bureau in Paris by Polish deputy Prime Minister Piotr Gliński and the mayor of Łodz Hanna Zdanowska.

Gliński told reporters that the bid is the beginning of the road to an event that can give a stimulus on an unprecedented scale to the development of not only the city of Łodz, but Poland as a whole.

The bid focuses on the theme “the city’s revitalisation”, as local authorities see Expo 2022 as being part of a long-term project to develop the New Centre of Łódź.

The proposed theme reflects the city’s own journey from a thriving textile industry centre, through an economic decline in the 1990s, to a period of an urban renewal, with former textile factories being transformed into offices and leisure facilities.

Poland has never hosted an Expo, but it has participated in many World and International Expos. (mk/rg)
