A cabaret-style show by Polish-Italian singer Monika Mariotti has opened the United Solo Europe, an international festival of one-person drama hosted by Warsaw’s Syrena Theatre.

Mariotti’s Spaghetti Poloneze, highly-acclaimed for its unique take on the two nations, kickstarted the weeklong event on Monday.

This year, the festival brings together artists from the United States, Germany, Spain and Ireland.

United Solo Europe, now in its fourth year in Warsaw, features some of the best performances that had been previously presented in the United States.

The event’s artistic director is Polish-born actor and writer Omar Sangare, a long-time promoter of one-person theatre. Sangare studied acting in Warsaw and the UK before settling in the United States.

In 2007, Sangare founded Dialogue One, an international festival for solo performances at Williams Theatre and has been in charge of the United Solo project in New York City since 2010. (mk/aba)
