“By decorating the Apostolic Nuncio to Poland, we express our thanks for His Excellency’s great commitment to the service for the development of the Holy See’s relations with Poland and for the Church,” said Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski during a ceremony on Friday.

“This is a bitter sweet event. Sweet, because we have hosted the Archbishop for six years in Poland. It has been a good time for Vatican-Polish relations and for the promotion of Poland in the world. Over the last months, the Archbishop had the opportunity to prepare a very important event – Pope Francis’s visit to Poland, during which the pope will meet with thousands of young people from all over the world,” Waszczykowski said.

“Bitter, because the Archbishop is leaving Poland. He is going to another country, where he will serve the Vatican diplomacy, but he will also serve the entire world in a very important country which is Russia. We hope that after years spent in Poland, the Archbishop will remain Polish ambassador, that in his new post he will recall Polish interests, history, culture, and problems,” Waszczykowski said.

The honorary “Bene Merito” distinction, established in 2009, is awarded by the Minister of Foreign Affairs in recognition of the service for strengthening the position of Poland on the international arena. (rg)
