Some 43,000 kids were registered at Poland's registry offices last year – the highest figure since 2009, the Dziennik Gazeta Prawna daily reported.

Data on the actual number of expat kids remains incomplete, as emigrants are not obliged to submit such information to state authorities.

The daily believes the uptick in the registration rate is down to the fact that many Polish women abroad who choose to have babies may be considering a return to their home country.

“The number of Polish foreign-based children registered in Poland could also be down to ongoing debates on curbing child benefits in many countries and the need to maintain a bond with their homeland ‘just in case’,” Dziennik Gazeta Prawna said. (aba/pk)
