The Warsaw Rising Run kicks off on Saturday evening in remembrance of the doomed 1944 insurgency against the Nazi German occupiers.

The 24th edition of the event, which falls over a week before the 72nd anniversary of the outbreak of the uprising, covers a distance of 10 km.

The route will go through the centre of the Polish capital, along the streets of particular historic importance.

The Warsaw Rising Run is one of the few running events in Poland taking place during the night.

The Warsaw Rising broke out on 1 August 1944 and lasted for two months before the insurgent command capitulated.

Some 200,000 Poles, mostly civilians, died in the conflict, and a Soviet-backed communist regime was ultimately installed in Poland after the war. (mo/ał)
