No other country has hosted more visits by a pontiff. Pope John Paul II visited Poland, his homeland, nine times, in 1979, 1983, 1987, twice in 1991, 1995, 1997, 1999 and 2002.

Benedict XVI’s only visit took place in 2006. The southern Polish city of Kraków, the venue of World Youth Day with Pope Francis this week, has hosted papal visits as many as seven times.

The United States comes second on the list of papal destinations, with ten visits by four popes – Paul VI (1965), John Paul II (1979, 1981, 1984, 1987, 1993, 1995, 1999), Benedict XVI (2008) and Francis (2015).
