Fred Schwartz, the founder of the Auschwitz Jewish Center Foundation, has died aged 85 in New York.

A statement on the foundation’s website read: “We are extremely saddened by the passing of Fred Schwartz, founder, the main supporter and president of the Auschwitz Jewish Center Foundation.
“Thanks to Fred’s vision, dedication and generosity since 2000 in Oświęcim there has been a place which remembers the once thriving Jewish community and teaches about dangers of prejudice and intolerance.”
Fred Schwartz was an American entrepreneur and philanthropist. He was born in 1931. (rg)
