All of Poland reads ‘Quo Vadis’

Hundreds of locations in Poland, including the capital Warsaw, will on Saturday read out Quo Vadis, one of the country’s best known novels.

The National Reading Day on 3 September will include public reading events and much more.
In the Saski gardens in Warsaw on Saturday, Polish president Andrzej Duda and First Lady Agata Kornhauser-Duda will read extracts from the book, written by Henryk Sienkiewicz.
“I strongly encourage all of you to read Quo Vadis together. I would like [this year’s edition of] National Reading Day to be a time for inspiring reflection for all of us, experiencing joy from coming into contact with truly great literature,” wrote President Duda in a letter inaugurating this year's campaign.
Sienkiewicz's 1895 novel, which is set in the decadent Rome of Emperor Nero, was translated into 50 languages. A 1951 Hollywood adaptation starring Peter Ustinov as the emperor was the highest grossing US movie of that year. (rg)
