The opening gala of the festival in the northern Polish city will take place at 7pm CET.

Filmmakers are vying for a Golden Lion statuette and PLN 100,000 (EUR 22,800/USD 25,000) awarded by an international jury, and for the Silver Lions and PLN 50,000 prizes.

Among them will be director Jan Matuszyński with his film The Last Family, telling the story of the tragic fate of the family of famous painter Zdzisław Beksiński.

The role of the artist is played by Andrzej Seweryn, who at the Locarno international film festival in August won the award for best actor.

There are seven debuts in the main competition at the Gdynia Film Festival, which is in its 41st year. (pk)
