The exhibition was organised jointly with the Warsaw-based History Meeting House.

During the opening ceremony, a secretary of state in the government of the Federal Land of Berlin Hella Dunger-Loeper referred to the exhibition’s title “A Phoenix from the Ashes”.

She said that after the war, the Polish capital – one of the first cities to fall victim to Germany’s campaign of destruction – was a sea of ruins and ashes.

She described the city’s fast reconstruction as an incredible achievement. She also spoke about a wide range of present-day contacts between Warsaw and Berlin involving not only the city authorities but also civic societies, entrepreneurs, academics and artists.

The exhibition is divided into three sections which present Warsaw’s vibrant life in the period between the two world wars, the city’s war-time annihilation and its post-war rebuilding.

The exhibition is open until 22 October. (mk/rg)
