The staging is a co-production by the Met, the Polish National Opera and the Baden-Baden Festival Hall in Germany (where it was premiered earlier this year) as well as the China National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, where it is to be shown at a later date.

“Tristan and Isolde” is Treliński’s second production at the Met. At the beginning of 2015, he made his debut there with a double-bill of Tchaikovsky’s “Iolanta” and Bartok’s “The Bluebeard’s Castle”. It was the success of that performance that brought him what is a great honour for any director: being at the centre stage in a season’s opening night.

The sets for the production are designed by the Slovak-born Polish artist Boris Kudlicka, who has worked with Treliński on many projects. Nina Stemme and Stuart Skelton appear in the title roles and Sir Simon Rattle is the conductor. There are seven more performances until 27 October.

The one on 8 October will be available to opera lovers worldwide as part of the “Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD” series.

In Warsaw, the production will be shown in two venues: the Studio Theatre and the Praha Cinema. (mk/rg)
