The Oscar Commission, which comprises representatives of the Polish film industry and the Polish Film Institute, made the decision via a majority vote, with a separate vote by some of the commission members.

In a statement, the commission said: “Andrzej Wajda's most recent film is a touching universal story about the destruction of an individual by a totalitarian system. The director has shown us a world in which beauty, art, and artistic integrity are persecuted.”

“Afterimage” focuses on the life of Władysław Strzemiński (1893-1952), a pioneer of the avant-garde in Polish visual arts, an artist who refused to toe the communist party line during the Stalinist period and experienced the dramatic consequences of his choices.

Strzemiński is portrayed in the film by Bogusław Linda, one of Poland’s foremost actors.

The film, scheduled for general release in January 2017, was given a warm reception at this month’s Polish Film Festival in Gdynia, where it was shown outside the main competition. Earlier this year it was presented at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Wajda’s honours include an Oscar for Lifetime Achievement and four Oscar nominations in the Best Foreign Language Film category: for “The Promised Land”, “The Maids of Wilko”, “Man of Iron”, and “Katyń”. (mk/rg)
