Bartosz Kowalski’s “Playground” (Plac Zabaw), a film about two Polish boys who engage in violence, will compete for the Sutherland Award for the “most original and imaginative directorial debut”.

Tomasz Wasilewski’s film “United States of Love” will be screened in the “Love” section of the festival. The feature film is a story of two women searching for love in Poland, just after the collapse of the Soviet bloc.

“The Innocents” by French director Anne Fontaine, featuring Polish film stars Agata Kulesza, Agata Buzek and Joanna Kulig, will be screened in the “Journey” section.

The BFI described the film as a “classy and compelling [...] drama about a young doctor becoming the sole hope for an isolated convent.”

The BFI London Film Festival features over 245 films from 74 countries including movies by directors Oliver Stone and Tom Ford.

The festival started on Wednesday and runs until 16 October. (tf/rg)
