Polish diplomat appointed EU ambassador to Vatican

Polish diplomat Jan Tombiński presented his credentials to Pope Francis on Monday as the European Union’s new ambassador to the Holy See.

Tombiński, 58, graduated from the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, southern Poland, with two diplomas, in German studies and history.

A career diplomat, he has previously served as Poland’s ambassador to Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and France, as well as, most recently, the EU’s ambassador to Ukraine.

He is fluent in English, German, French, Slovenian, Czech and Ukrainian.

His wife, Agnieszka Tombińska, has a Ph.D in linguistics from the Jagiellonian University. They have ten children. (mk/rg)
