The host country is represented by four violinists: Amelia Maszońska, Celina Kotz, Robert Łaguniak and Maria Włoszczowska, and Polish music lovers hope they would be among the winners.

In the previous edition of the competition, five years ago, not a single Pole qualified for the finals.

The names of the finalists will be announced after Tuesday’s auditions while a prizewinners’ gala will be held on Sunday, 23 October.

In the finals, each of the participants has to perform two concertos, including one by Henryk Wieniawski, the 19th century Polish violinist and composer after whom the competition is named.

The jury of the Wieniawski Competition, one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious events of its kind, is chaired by Maxim Vengerov. The event is being held under the honorary patronage of Polish President Andrzej Duda. (mk/pk)
