Polish city commemorates Lutheran Reformation anniversary

The Silesian city of Cieszyn has formally held the Inauguration of the anniversary of 500 years of the Lutheran Reformation.

A special service held at the Jesus Church with a sermon by Bishop Marian Niemiec was attended by representatives of other Christian faiths, including the Roman Catholic Primate of Poland Archbishop Wojciech Polak and Archbishop Abel of the Orthodox Church.

A letter to Polish Lutherans was addressed by President Andrzej Duda. There are some 70,000 Lutheran protestants in Poland gathered in 134 parishes, with the majority living in the southern Cieszyński area.

The 18th-century Jesus Church in Cieszyn is the biggest Lutheran church in Poland. (ek/rg)
