“For Catholics, this is an opportunity to contemplate the meaning of life and a time to share their experience of faith,” said Fr. Bogdan Bartold, pastor of the St. John Archcathedral in Warsaw.

Advent always begins on a Sunday, which is closest to the feast of St. Andrew the Apostle, and lasts between 23 and 28 days, including the four Sundays.

This year, the first Sunday of Advent is 27 November, and the last day of the period is always Christmas Eve – 24 December.

During Advent, the liturgical vestments of priests celebrating Mass will be purple.

Fr Bartold told the PAP news agency that Advent marks the beginning of a new church year.

“Advent is a time that precedes Christmas and prepares believers for the coming of Christ in the liturgy of Christmas,” he added. (rg)
