Polish musicians in the race for Grammys

Three Polish musicians have been nominated for the 59th Grammy Awards, among the world's most prestigious awards for musical achievemnt.

The composer Krzysztof Penderecki is among the five nominees in the Best Choral Performance category for the CD “Penderecki Conducts Penderecki” recorded by the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus.
Penderecki already has four Grammys to his name (1988, 1999, 2001, 2013).
Polish baritone Mariusz Kwiecień sang the title role in the Royal Opera House production of Karol Szymanowski’s “King Roger”, which had its UK premiere in May 2015. A DVD of the production has been nominated in the Best Opera Recording category.
Another Polish name among this year’s Grammy nominees is that of the composer Jerzy Fitelberg. A CD featuring a selection of his chamber works recorded by the Canadian ARC Ensemble is shortlisted in the Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance category.
Jerzy Fitelberg, the son of the famous conductor Grzegorz Fitelberg, was a Polish composer who was forced to flee Europe in the 1930s. His career in the United States was cut short by his premature death in 1951, aged 48.
The Grammy-nominated CD is the second volume of the acclaimed "Music in Exile" series which explores the works of composers who were forced to emigrate from Europe during the 1930s. (mk/rg)
