Smoleń had been suffering from health problems for a long time.

"It is very sad news. We lost a very sensitive artist, a legend of cabaret, an artist with extraordinary satirical talent," wrote minister of culture Piotr Gliński in a special comment.

"He could make people cry with laughter, while pointing out the absurdities of communism. He will remain an icon of Polish cabaret. We will miss him on the Polish stage," wrote Gliński.

Born in 1947, Bohdan Smoleń was an actor, satirical singer, cabaret artist, a member of the "Tey" cabaret famous during the communist period in Poland and a philanthropist. (mol/pk)
