New lyrics for a traditional Polish Christmas song have been released by Caritas, Poland's largest charity, to promote its work in war-torn areas of the Middle East.

The charity's song draws parallels between a biblical story – where a pregnant Mary, far from home, finds shelter and gives birth to Jesus – and homeless refugee families in Syria and Iraq who are receiving aid from Caritas in Poland.

The song is performed by Violetta Brzezińska, and an acccomanying video clip shows Syrian families in refugee camps.

Some 3,000 people regularly support 1,000 families in the Middle East under the Caritas "Family for Family” programme.

Caritas has asked that the song be sung during church services on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, 24 and 25 December. (vb)
