The first-ever presentation of Szymanowski’s opera in Australia, it is a revival of the highly-acclaimed production which was premiered in May 2014 at the Royal Opera House in London, in partnership with the "Polska Music programme" of the Warsaw-based Adam Mickiewicz Institute.

It was described by The New York Times as "a must-see". The Telegraph called it "a major artistic triumph", The Times praised the director Kasper Holten for "a big, bold Szymanowski staging", while Opera Today wrote: "The musical and dramatic values of this production are convincing and rewarding".

The performances of "King Roger" are accompanied by a series of events promoting Szymanowski’s work, including a concert of his songs and chamber pieces at the Sydney Opera House on 29 January.

Premiered in 1926, "King Roger" is the fruit of Szymanowski’s fascination with Oriental culture. It is set in the 12th century Norman Kingdom of Sicily during the reign of King Roger II.

The work is a philosophical-religious tale of sacrifice and faith. It presents the conflict between different religions and visions of life.

It will remain in the repertoire until 15 February. In the second half of May it will move to the Arts Centre in Melbourne. A total of 12 performances are planned. (mk/vb)
