Pizza first reached Poland in the 16th century, and was served at the royal wedding of Bona Sforza and Sigismund I of Poland in 1518.

Bona Sforza was a member of the powerful House of Sforza, which ruled the Duchy of Milan.

However the first restaurant serving the Italian dish in Poland was not opened until the 1970s.

In 2015 there were some 4,000 pizzerias in Poland.

It is believed that the pizza originated in ancient Greece as a thin bread spread with oil, garlic and herbs.

The dish is believed to have reached Rome in 500BC and remained a food for the lower classes until the 19th century.

It evolved in 1889 when a baker prepared a pizza akin to a modern-day Margherita to mark Italian Queen Margherita of Savoy’s visit to Napoli. The commemorative pizza featured tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and basil, representing the national colours of Italy. (vb/pk)
