Work on changing the Polish flag and coat of arms has been going on for about a year, the country’s Culture Minister Piotr Gliński has said.

Gliński told private broadcaster RMF FM on Monday that plans to change the national symbols will enable them to be used in new technologies.

“There is not one standard for the Polish national emblem,” Gliński said, adding that the case was the same for the colour of the flag.

The Rzeczpospolita daily recently said that the current official emblem – a crowned white eagle painted on a red background originally designed by Andrzej Heidrich – will be replaced by a vector image which will make reproduction and printing easier.

The culture minister rejected claims that an earlier emblem, featuring a cross on the bird’s crown, would be used, calling them “media hype”. (vb)
