Popularity of Polish literature in Greece unchanged

Greek interest in Polish literature has not changed despite a slump in book sales caused by an economic downturn, the IAR news agency has reported.

“There is a lot of Polish literature translated into Greek and it sells well,” bookstore worker Jorgos Fomopulos told Polish Radio, adding that authors Witold Gombrowicz, Zbigniew Herbert, Czesław Miłosz, and Stanisław Jerzy Lec are the most popular.
Translator Nokos Panajotopulos said Polish literature was among the greatest in Europe and the world and “some Polish poets are among the most exceptional”.
Panajotopulos added that Cyprian Norwid was considered one of the best authors of the last century and Poles as a nation were appreciated for their achievements in culture.
Among the most often purchased Polish books in Greece are Zniewolony Umysł (The Captive Mind) by Miłosz and Miecz Przeznaczenia (Sword of Destiny) by Andrzej Sapkowski, IAR reported. (vb)
