Poland's National Film Archive has received PLN 600,000 (EUR 141,000) for repairs to its storage facility to prevent thousands of original film reels from mildew and mould.

The foundations of the building, which contains some 120,000 boxes of film, are flooding while its roof is leaky, the IAR news agency said.

According to the film archive's director Anna Sienkiewicz-Rogowska, the PN 600,000 given by the culture ministry will pay for “ad hoc protection of the roof and foundations of the building”.

But she added that in her opinion the building was not a suitable storage location.

“The repairs are only until a time when the National Film Archive gets its new warehouse,” she said.

While the film archives have not been damaged, “the state of the building is bad enough that the collection may be destroyed if they are not moved,” Sienkiewicz-Rogowska said. (vb/pk)
