The festival will this year focus on the works of German composer Johann Sebastian Bach, who wrote music in the Baroque period, as well as Polish pianist Fryderyk Chopin, who composed in the Romantic era and who admired Bach.

The event will also include performances of "Vespro della Beata Vergine" by Claudio Monteverdi, Giuseppe Verdi’s opera "Macbeth" and works by Ludwig van Beethoven, Johannes Brahms, Robert Schumann, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Among Polish artists whose pieces will be played at the festival are Ignacy Feliks Dobrzyński, Karol Szymanowski and Józef Krogulski.

The festival will feature performances by Argentina’s Martha Argerich, America’s Garrick Ohlsson, China’s Yundi and South Korea’s Seong-Jin Cho, winners of the International Chopin Piano Competition.

The festival, organised annually since 2005 by the Fryderyk Chopin Institute, kicks off in Warsaw on 12 August and ends on 30 August. (vb/pk)
