The Polish institute in London was in the process of digitising its archives when it uncovered a number of duplicates from Poland’s government-in-exile, which functioned mainly in London during World War II, remaining there after the communist regime was installed in Poland.

The archive's director at the Polish Institute, Andrzej Suchcitz, said many of the documents are of a technical nature and are priceless to interested historians.

“In total, we handed over about 500 boxes to Poland,” Suchcitz said.

There is a second archive of military documents regarding awarding orders and promotions but also the management of the Polish navy during World War II. The collection also includes papers about the Katyn massacre of some 20,000 Polish officers by Soviets in western Russia, and years of cover-up by Moscow. (vb)
