Polish films at Cannes Festival

Even though there is no Polish entry in the main competition at this year’s Cannes Festival, several Polish films will be shown during the world’s most prestigious cinema event, which opens in southern France on Wednesday.

Andrzej Wajda’s feature ‘Man of Iron’, which focuses on the birth of the Solidarity movement, is one of 16 history-making films which are to be shown as part of celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the Cannes Festival.

‘Man of Iron’ won the Palme d’Or (Golden Palm) at Cannes in 1981. The screening will be attended by former Polish President and Solidarity leader Lech Wałęsa.

‘Time to Go’ by Grzegorz Mołda is among nine films running for the Palme d’Or for a short film.

The main protagonist of this 15-minute feature is Marta, an employee of a car repair workshop which is owned by her father. After her boyfriend is arrested she is faced with a dilemma - to remain loyal to her father or do what it takes to get her boyfriend released.

Twenty-four-year-old Mołda this year graduated from a film school in Gdynia. northern Poland. ‘Time to Go’ is his diploma work. It has been selected for the Cannes competition out of over 4,800 shorts.

The Cannes Festival runs until 28 May. (mk/pk)
