Audiences will be able to hear premieres of contemporary music inspired by the work of Polish-born British writer Joseph Conrad during a festival starting on Thursday.

The Pictures from Conrad festival begins in the Wilanów district of Warsaw at 6pm.

It will feature work by composers who have picked a novel by the writer as an inspiration for a piece of music.

Fragments of texts selected by the composers will also be read out at the concerts.

The festival will take in several towns and runs until 26 November.

Born in 1857, Conrad (Józef Konrad Korzeniowski) is regarded as one of the greatest novelists writing in English.

His major works include Lord Jim, The Secret Agent, The Shadow Line, Heart of Darkness and Almayer’s Folly.
