Polish authorities have signed a letter of intent to build a new museum at the site of the former Treblinka Extermination Camp, where as many as 900,000 Jews were killed by the German Nazis during World War II.

The museum of “remembrance of the German death camp and labour camp” is to be set up by the end of February next year.

The letter was signed a day ahead of the 75th anniversary of the first transport of victims from the Warsaw ghetto to Treblinka during the Nazi German occupation of Poland.

More Jews were exterminated at the German Nazi camp at Treblinka, north-east of Warsaw, than anywhere else -- other than Auschwitz -- during World War II.

Among those who died there is the legendary Janusz Korczak, a Polish-Jewish children's rights activist and teacher who is believed to have accompanied nearly 200 orphans from the Warsaw ghetto to the gas chambers at Treblinka.

The museum is to be co-run by the Polish culture ministry and the regional government's governor. (vb/pk)
