Police detained 1,100 drink-drivers while 203 motorists lost their licences for exceeding the speed limit by 50 kmh.

"We will never be happy if even one person dies on the roads, but [the figures] were better than last year," said Radosław Kobryś from the traffic department of national police headquarters.

Poland is the third worst in the EU in terms of road safety, according to the country’s central audit office.

Safety is lower only in Romania and Bulgaria, according to the Supreme Audit Office, Poland’s top independent state audit body.
