His feature film debut Zgoda (Reconciliation) was among the 18 entries in the festival’s main competition.

The film is set in 1945 at a labour camp that was set up for Germans, Silesians and Poles by Poland’s newly installed communist regime at the site of a former auxiliary camp within the Auschwitz-Birkenau complex.

One of the main protagonists, Franek, joins the communist secret police, deluding himself into thinking that he will be able to trick the system in order to save Anna, a woman he loves. He does not know that his friend Erwin, a German who has long been in love with Anna, is also an inmate in the camp.

The cast of the film includes Zofia Wichłacz and Jakub Gierszał, up-and-coming stars, both of whom have been named Shooting Stars by the European Film Promotion network.

The production will have its Polish premiere at this month’s Polish Film Festival in Gdynia before going on general release in mid-October. (mk/gs)
