The average student is PLN 2,000 (EUR 470) in the red, the debt watchdog found.

The 5,636 such debtors are chiefly undergraduates of private universities, but the problem also concerns the students of extramural studies at state institutions of higher education.

“Running up a debt so early in life is not a good symptom,” said Adam Łącki, chairman of the National Debt Register. One of the reasons behind the trend is “insufficient financial means for students to support themselves,” Łącki said. Many undergraduates have to handle payments for accommodation, food and academic books on their own, which may leave little money for tuition, Łącki added.

A study found that 48 percent of Poles aged between 18 and 25 receive financial support from their families. (aba/pk)
