Poland on Sunday secured a spot in next year’s World Cup in Russia after a 4-2 win over Montenegro in their last qualifying match in Warsaw.

After the referee blew the final whistle of Sunday's game, fans gathered at the city’s National Stadium and many in front of television sets across the country were overwhelmed with joy to see the national team qualify for its eighth World Cup after a hiatus of 12 years.

After the match, players made posts in social media in which they thanked fans for their support.

“We are going to Russia! Thank you for always being with us!” Wolfsburg midfielder Jakub Błaszczykowski wrote on Instagram.

Hull City winger Kamil Grosicki echoed: “Dreams do come true, but we want more ❤ Thank you for your support.”

Napoli striker Arkadiusz Milik, who is now sidelined for several months after a serious knee injury, also contributed a post: “Good job, Team Poland! We got the qualification! In June, we’re flying to [Russia to] make our dreams come true. I want to thank the fans very much for their support today in the stands. It gives me a lot of strength in my fight to return.”

West Bromwich Albion defensive midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak wrote: “Thank you fans for cheering us on. We will see you in Russia. Good job, team.” (gs/pk)
