The exhibition which was set up 27 years ago needed an update, according to Barbara Kurowska, the director of the Łódź City Museum which houses it.

It is the world's largest exhibition dedicated to the world-famous Polish-Jewish classical pianist.

Among exhibits is a mold of Rubinstein's hand, his awards and medals, an Oscar, letters he penned to his friends including Polish poet Julian Tuwim and his contemporary Karol Szymanowski, his wife's and daughters' handicrafts, his favourite cigars, and furniture from his flat in Paris.

The updated exhibition's opening, attended by his two daughters, coincided with the 168th anniversary of Fryderyk Chopin's death. Rubinstein (1887-1982) has been called one of the greatest Chopin interpreters of his time. (vb)
