The country’s Central Statistical Office (GUS) has said that over 11.6 million tonnes of municipal waste were collected in Poland last year, 7.3% more than in 2015.

Last year segregated waste accounted for a greater proportion of the total amount of municipal rubbish collected: 25.2% as opposed to 23.4% in 2015.

Under EU rules, Poland has to ensure that half of paper, metal, plastic and glass waste is recycled by 2020.

Failure to meet the target will see Poland facing steep fines.

The Polish environment ministry has said that recycling targets will be increased within the next few months.
