Spending earmarked for culture in Poland has risen by more than 20%, Culture Minister Piotr Gliński said on Friday, summing up his track record after the first two years of the country’s conservative government.

Gliński, who is also a deputy prime minister, told a press conference: "We have managed to increase the budget for culture by about 20%; the budget has increased to over PLN 4 billion" (EUR 943m, USD 1.1bn), or more than 1% of the overall state budget.

Gliński said that the culture ministry was setting up "a completely new academic institution - the Institute of Solidarity and Valour."

Its goal will be to honor people who helped Poles during World War II and in the post-war years.

In a series of news conferences, Poland’s Cabinet ministers have this week been summing up their achievements at the midpoint of the government’s term.

The conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party swept to power after a landslide win in parliamentary elections in October 2015.
