Saturday is the first day of auditions, which consist of three stages, ending on November 24 with the announcement of an international jury’s verdict.

The first-prize winner will receive a Golden Baton and a cash award of EUR 25,000.

The entrants have been selected from a pool of over 170 applicants.

Poland is represented by ten conductors, including Jacek Brzoznowski, at 23 the youngest of the entrants, and by Marta Gardolińska, winner of the Mendelssohn Conductors’ Competition in Thessaloniki.

The event is being held under the honorary patronage of Polish President Andrzej Duda.

Founded in 1979, the Fitelberg Competition in Katowice is regarded as one of the world’s most prestigious competitions for conductors.

It is a member of the Geneva-based World Federation of Music Competitions.

The event is dedicated to Grzegorz Fitelberg (1879-1953), a prominent conductor and composer, and the founder of the Great Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra (now the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra) based in Katowice.
