Jarosław Kaczyński, the leader of Poland’s ruling conservatives, has donated a book about cats that he was spotted reading in parliament to an online charity auction, his Law and Justice (PiS) party has said in a tweet.

Kaczyński, a well-known cat lover, was photographed reading the book, entitled The Atlas of Cats: Wild and Domestic, during a session of the lower house of Poland’s parliament on Friday, sparking a wave of comments.

Proceeds from auctioning off the book will go to the Society for the Care of Animals in the southern city of Kraków to finance the purchase of an ultrasound device for diagnosing pets, according to the charytatywni.allegro.pl website.

"For friends of animals with very warm greetings," Kaczyński wrote in the dedication.

Earlier, party spokeswoman Beata Mazurek posted a picture of Kaczyński with the book, saying on Twitter: “May the pre-holiday reading about cats by PiS chairman Jarosław Kaczyński encourage us to support pet shelters and those who help animals.”
